Synopsis
A sad and magnificent war movie based on the true story of 71 student soldiers who ran into the line of fire in their school uniforms in August, 1950 to protect the Nakdong River frontline on which the fate of the Korean War depended. At 4 a.m. on June 25, 1950, the Korean War breaks out, which no one had expected. The North Koreans are armed with impressive firepower and make their way rapidly down south while the South Korean army loses battle after battle. As the entire world is caught up in the fear of a third world war, the UN decides to send massive numbers of troops into Korea. The South Korean army has nowhere else to retreat to and gathers all its troops along the Nakdong River to hold the line until the UN troops arrive. KANG Seok-dae(KIM Seung-woo)'s unit, which has been guarding the city of Pohang, also receives orders to report to the Nakdong River. Now that their forces have been pushed all the way down south, they cannot afford to leave Pohang. KANG Seok-dae has no choice but to leave 71 student troops who have never held a gun to guard the place. Jang Bum(T.O.P.) is appointed squadron leader since he is the only one who has actually seen a battle, but Gab-jo(KWON Sang-woo) who volunteered for the army as an alternative to being dragged off to an orphanage openly ignores Jang-bum. The 71 boys whose training consisted of shooting one shot each, wait for Seok-dae's unit to return with no idea as to what may happen in Pohang where there are no refugees or soldiers left. PARK Mu-rang(CHA Seung-won), who has been instrumental in flattening the city of Youngdeok, ignores orders to go to Nakdong River and instead leads the 766 commando unit of the People's Army towards Pohang. His plan is to go through Pohang and conquer Busan in the shortest amount of time, which is the final destination. PARK Mu-rang's unit arrives in Pohang in no time and the 71 boys left at Pohang Girls' Middle School by the National Command are awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of an attack. Pohang, which had been quiet, is now overcast by the threat of war and the student soldiers must fight against the People's Army whose troops are increasing by the hour- (KOFA)
