Description
Having helmed many short films over the years, actor Yoo Ji Tae finally directed his first full-length feature Mai Ratima, which premiered at the 2012 Busan Film Festival. The film's title is the name of one of its protagonists, a 22-year-old Thai woman (newcomer Park Ji Soo) who comes to Korea as a mail-order bride. Life is tough for Mai, as her husband (Lee Joon Hyuk) is mentally slow and she has to endure constant abuse from her brother-in-law and mother-in-law. Down-and-out Soo Young (Bae Soo Bin, 26 Years) becomes her unlikely savior and the two run off to Seoul together, but life in the big city is just as unforgiving. Things begin to look up for Soo Young after he meets bar hostess Young Jin (So Yoo Jin, Golden Fish) while Mai descends to the streets. Yoo Ji Tae's impressive debut feature explores the experiences of poor workers and Southeast Asian women in Korea, frankly depicting the hardships and discrimination faced by those on the fringe of society.
