Directed by Lee Hae Joon (Castaway on the Moon), My Dictator spans two decades in complicated relations between North and South Korea and strained relations between a father and son, played by award-winning actors Sol Kyung Gu (Cold Eyes) and Park Hae Il (Whistle Blower). As a bit actor who loses himself into the role of North Korean dictator Kim Il Sung, Sol Kyung Gu notably portrays the character till old age with the help of special makeup by Song Jong Hee, who also did Park Hae Il's aged makeup in A Muse. My Dictator begins in the early 70s following the July 4, 1972 North-South Joint Communique which outlined steps towards peaceful reunification. With the first Inter-Korean Summit on the horizon, the Korean CIA begins security preparations for a potential meeting between the two Koreas' heads of state. They decide to set up a simulated summit to review different scenarios and potential dangers. Kim Sung Geun (Sol Kyung Gu), a passionate but untalented stage actor, is cast as Kim Il Sung's stand-in and he pours everything into the role, so much so that he is unable to pull out of the role. His dictatorial persona creates a further rift with his embarrassed and frustrated son Tae Sik (Park Hae Il), who cuts his father from his life. Twenty years later, the estranged father and son reconnect again when Tae Sik falls into debt with the wrong people. |
