Hugely controversial when it was released in 1956, director Han Hyung Mo's romantic melodrama Madame Freedom explores changing views on sexuality and the role of women in postwar society. The film depicts the extramarital affairs of a modern working couple: college professor Jang Tae Yun (Park Am) and his wife Oh Seon Yeong (Kim Jeong Rim), who gets a job at a clothing store to help support the household. Her world opening up as she steps out into society, Seon Yeong begins to learn dancing from a younger man (Lee Min) and decides to invest in the business of independent-minded friend Choi Yun Ju (No Kyung Hee), who is carrying on an affair. Meanwhile, her husband develops interest in a typist (Yang Mi Hee).
