After chronicling the roaring age of Busan gangsters in Nameless Gangster, director Yoon Jong Bin goes back even further in time to another turbulent era when outlaws ran rampant. Set in the 19th century during the waning years of the Joseon dynasty, Kundo: Age of the Rampant rolls out a kimchi western revenge saga packed with rollicking action and memorable one-liners delivered with stylistic flare. Kang Dong Won (Haunters) makes his post-army comeback in the role of the cruel villain, while Ha Jung Woo, in his fourth collaboration with director Yoon, acts up a charismatic storm as a cleaver-wielding butcher-turned-vigilante. A top-notch supporting cast that includes Jo Jin Woong, Kim Sung Kyun, Ma Dong Seok, Lee Sung Min, Lee Kyung Young and Yoon Ji Hye join in the swordplay and shootouts as the fierce and colorful pieces of a bandit clan, or "kundo," that steals from the rich and gives to the poor in these lawless and violent times. As the illegitimate son of a gisaeng and a nobleman, Jo Yun (Kang Dong Won) grew up enduring the spite and antipathy of his father and stepmother. After his brother's death, Jo Yun seizes the chance to secure power and fortune by plundering the poor and eliminating those in his way, including his own family members. He hires poor butcher Dochi (Ha Jung Woo) to assassinate his pregnant sister-in-law, but Dochi backs out on the deed. For turning on Jo Yun, Dochi loses his family and nearly his own life, but he gets saved by the kundo. From that day on, Dochi grows into a new man with a singular purpose: bloody revenge against Jo Yun. |
