This book is the tale of a tiger disguised as the mother of a group of children. There are similar tales all over the world, like the European "The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids" and "Little Red Riding Hood." The story has a plaintive tint rather than the cheerful atmosphere, even though the confrontation between the tiger and the siblings has some humor. The repeated utterances in this book, "Fee-faw fum, give me a piece of rice cake or I will eat you up," have been favorite expressions handed down by word of mouth for generation after generation in Korea. This picture book is made with special concern for words which children will find useful and interesting and illustrated with a distinctive touch. Through this book, foreign children will feel closer to Korean culture and understand it better. Lee Kyu-hee, who retold the story, has been honored with several children's literature awards in Korea. John H. T. Harvey, the translator of this book, studied English Literature at Harvard University and has spent more than 20 years in Korea with Lee Chun-oc, his wife and co-translator. They have translated a wide variety of cultural publications together. |
