Description
Hur Jin Ho Director's Collection Blu-ray boxset comes with four films from the acclaimed director.
1. Christmas in August (1998)
Shot in a secluded area outside of Seoul, Hur Jin Ho's first film Christmas in August centers around a small photography shop owned by Jung Won (Han Suk Kyu), who has an incurable disease that leaves him only a short time to live. Meanwhile, he meets Darim (Shim Eun Ha), a meter reader who drops by his studio to develop pictures of parking violators. As she becomes a part of his daily routine, he finds himself becoming more and more attached to her. But he can't express his affections to her because he knows he doesn't have much time left.
2. One Fine Spring Day (2001) While Christmas in August was structured around the beginning of a love relationship, his sophomore feature One Fine Spring Day is more concerned with how it ends. Sang Woo (Yoo Ji Tae) is a recording engineer, Eun Su (Lee Young Ae) is a radio producer, and everyday sounds, both man-made and natural, make up a crucial aspect of the film's style. Meeting during a trip to record the sounds of nature, Sang Woo and Eun Su fall quietly and passionately in love, but romance can be as fleeting as a sound.
3. April Snow (2005)
Released in Korea and Japan simultaneously, April Snow centers on In Su (Korean Wave superstar Bae Yong Joon) as he travels to Korea's east coast after discovering that his wife Su Jin (Im Sang Hyo) was critically injured in a car accident. To In Su's surprise, it seems that she was traveling with a man named Kyung Ho (Ryoo Seung Soo), and both of them now lie in the operating room as they undergo treatment for their injuries. While waiting for news of his wife's condition, In Su meets the man's wife, Seo-Young (Son Ye Jin), and together the two of them piece together the devastating truth: their spouses were having an affair. Deeply upset by this shocking revelation, the duo's world spins out of control, as they both come to grips with their feelings of sorrow and betrayal. After several chance encounters, the two become closer. Both stay at the same dingy motel, and soon enough, they forge a deep connection. Will they act on their feelings for each other? And if they do succumb to their passions, will it be out of revenge or out of love?
4. Happiness (2007) Director Hur Jin Ho addresses the two unavoidable facts of life in Happiness: we all want to be happy, and we all die eventually. Featuring a sterling cast headed by the charismatic Hwang Jung Min and Lim Soo Jung, Happiness is a warm, heartfelt, yet brutally realistic love story about two disheartened souls both suffering from illness. Young Soo (Hwang Jung Min), a freewheeler who runs a nightclub, is met with life's several crossroads all at once. First his business goes bankrupt, then his girlfriend (Kong Hyo Jin) dumps him, and to add insult to injury, he discovers that he has a serious liver disease. Telling all his friends that he is going to study abroad, he checks into House of Hope, a home for incurables in the quite, secluded countryside. An eight-year resident and an employee of the rehab center, Eun Hee (Lim Soo Jung) suffers from a severe lung illness, though not a glimpse of sickness appears in her attitude. Always cheerful and optimistic, she finds Young Soo's aloofness quite charming. Drawn to her strength, Young Soo also falls for her and the two become inseparable, even finding a place of their own. One year rolls by and while Eun Hee seems endlessly content, the monotone of daily routines and Eun Hee's ailing condition begin to weigh Young Soo down. Just then, his ex-girlfriend makes a surprise visit from Seoul...
