Description



 This set of 12 post cards features Western depictions of the Korean flag produced during the turbulent years of the Daehan Empire (1897-1910) and the Japanese colonial era (1910-1945). The colorful images used on the postcards come from a variety of historic sources, including trade cards, luggage labels and magazine illustrations. Not only do the postcards include some of the earliest depictions of the Korean flag in the Western world, but they also reveal some of the first depictions of Korea and Koreans in the West, including a turn-of-the-century illustration of the Emperor Gojong and captivating---and sometimes fanciful---depictions of Seoul’s royal palaces.


1. 1882년 미국 해군부 항해국이 발행한 『해상 국가들의 깃발』에 실린 최초의 태극기. / The first Korean flag listed in Flags of Maritime Nations , published by the Bureau of Navigation of the U.S. Navy in 1882.
