This book serves as a guide enabling readers to explore the heart of Seoul by giving detailed explanations of the three best-known meccas for lovers of traditional culture: Gyeongbokgung palace, Bukchon, and Insa-dong. Adding flavor to this illustrated guidebook are abundant photos, maps, and other useful information. Situated on the most auspicious site in Seoul, Gyeongbokgung is said to be endowed with energy gathered from the four surrounding mountains and the Han River. Standing majestically, it allows visitors to observe the traces and vestiges of Joseon monarchs who once ruled the state with gentle dignity and wisdom. Once an essential part of everyday life, traditional Korean houses and alleyways have now become rare, and Bukchon is one of the few sites to still preserve them in the heart of Seoul, complete with an ondol floor heater, a flowery yard and a wooden-floored maru. It is such a pleasant experience to visit the hanok (traditional Korean house) village within the downtown area. In the last chapter, such items as pottery wares, calligraphy brushes and traditional Korean costumes draw your attention in Insa-dong, a street where tradition and modernity meet together and street artists and troupes entertain viewers. |
