Description A comprehensive collection of essays originally presented at the hosted by the Daesan Foundation and the Arts Council Korea, held in May 2005. Essays aim to analyze the source of war and conflict in the world, to examine the role of literature in world peace, to focus on the ideals of peace, the relationship between East and West, the reality of Western civilization versus the civilization of other countries, and the changing reality of literature. In each essay, participants address the theme of peace and the questions related to the possibilities of peace. Participants include Nobel Prizing-winning author Oe Kenzaburo, other Nobel Prize nominees, renowned U.S. and European scholars and writers, and prominent Korean literary scholars and authors Kim Uchang, Paik Nak-chung, Yu Jong-ho, and Hwang Seok-young, among others. Proceedings provide proofs of cultural exchange, enabling a new understanding of the role of writers in contributing to world peace. The Forum was divided into thirteen diverse sessions: -Session I: Human Values and Political Change -Session II: Literature and Human Universality -Session III: Ideals of Peace in the Korean Traditiona -Session IV: East Asian Ideas of World Order -Session V: Power, Human Values and Political Order: Dictatorships, Wars and Peace -Session VI: The Idea of Perpetual Peace -Session VII: Varities of Modernity in the World -Session VIII: Peace and Difference: Gender, Race, Religion -Session IX: Varieties of Western Modernity -Session X: Commonality of East Asian Culture: Past, Present and Future -Session XI: Technological Change and the Globalization of Communication -Session XII: Ecology, Sustainable Growth and Literature -Session XIII: Poverty and Stratification of the World

About the Editor Kim Uchang. Literary critic and scholar. Born in Hampyeong in 1937 and studied at Seoul National University, Cornell and Harvard. Taught at Seoul National University, State University of New York and Korea University where he is currently Professor Emeritus. His publications on literary criticism, art history and social analysis include: The Poet in Time of Need, Studies in Aesthetic Reason, Towards Rational Society, Politics and the Life-World, Landscape and Mind. Recipient of the Seoul Award for Cultural and Artistic Criticism, the Palbong Award for Literary Criticism, and the Daesan Literary Award.

About the Daesan Foundation The Daesan Foundation has been established under the auspices of Kyobo Life Insurance Co., Ltd. with the aim of fostering Korea's national culture and globalizing Korean literature. The Daesan Foundation has been engaged in projects of public interest, including the Daesan Literary Awards, Grants for the Translations of Korean Literature and World Classics, International Literary Exchanges and other projects of cultural development.
