Description
1. Sweet Dream (Lullaby of Death)
Ae-sun (Mun Ye-bong) is the vain wife of a middle-class man who has no interest in looking after her family. Her exasperated husband (Lee Geum-ryong) chases Ae-sun out and she abandons her husband and her daughter Jeong-hee (Yoo Seon-ok) to stay at a hotel with her lover. One day, Ae-sun finds out that her lover is a poor student boarder and a criminal, not the prosperous entrepreneur she thought he was. She reports her lover to the police as he plans to rob someone, and leaves once more to live with a showy dancer.
2. Military Train
Kim Jeom-yong (Wang Pyeong) and Won Jin (Dok Eun-gi) are friends who are living together. Kim Jeom-yong is a train conductor who wants to drive military trains. Won Jin is the fianc? of Yeong-shim, Jeom-yeong's younger sister. However, Yeong-shim is working as a geisha to support her brother, and needs 2,000 KRW to walk out of her job. At this time, a spy approaches Won Jin and offers 2,000 KRW in exchange for information on the military train. After providing the spy with the information, Won Jin is disturbed by pangs of conscience and ends up confessing to his friend Jeom-yong about what he did. Jeom-yong quickly reports this to the police before the spies blow up the military train and the police are able to round up the whole spy ring. The morning papers carry headlines about the arrest of spies at the break of dawn in Seoul, their plans to overtake the military train foiled. Jeom-yong's older brother returns from Manchuria, and Jeom-yong leaves for North Korea after becoming the conductor of the military train. Won Jin commits suicide by jumping into Jeom-yong's train, and Jeom-yong finds his will while saying a silent prayer in front of his body. The will talks of Won Jin's wish to guard the rail tracks in his afterlife and his hopes of prosperity of his country and peace in East Asia. The train starts off powerfully with its whistles blaring.
3. Fisherman's Fire Hit hard by a prolonged scarcity of fish, fisherman Chun-sam goes out fishing to pay off his debt to Clerk Jang where he meets an unexpected death. Clerk Jang wants to take Chun-sam's daughter In-sun as his mistress in exchange of his money. In-sun is in love with Cheon-seok and cannot make up her mind when Ok-bun asks her to come up to Seoul. Cheol-soo, the son of Clerk Jang, harbors evil intentions for In-sun and In-sun decides to go to Seoul with him to pay off her father's debt. After losing her virginity to Cheol-soo, In-sun becomes devastated and moves to Ok-bun's house. But when she is unable to get a job, she refuses to burden Ok-bun and chooses to become a geisha. |
