Several formulas exist when it comes to making goosebump-raising horror movies. They are usually released during the summer season. Nine out of 10 films introduce beauty protagonists. And they take the form of revenge by social outcasts who are alienated in society, widely called "wangdda" in Korean. One of Korea's recent trends is to set horror stories around girls' high schools, following the success of director Bak Gihyeong's "Whispering Corridors" (1998). Acclaimed for introducing the classical horror film genre to Korea with his previous two horror movies "Nightmare" (2000) and "Phone" (2002), director An Byeonggi again greets horror movie fans with his third shot "Bunshinsaba" which best suits the above requirements. To be screened with English subtitles, the film centers around Yujin (rising actress Lee Seeun), who has transferred schools. By chanting an evil spell of death, "Bunshinsaba," and scribbling on an "Ouija" board with a pen, she is able to curse her enemies and cause the spellbound to die one after another. Meanwhile, fine arts teacher Eunju (Kim Gyuri of "Whispering Corridors") also transferred schools, and is endowed with a special ability to see the ghost of Insuk (Lee Yuri), a dead female student. Eunju moreover finds that the death of Insuk is by no means irrelevant to her own life. "Bunshinsaba" has been one of the most familiar incantations among schoolgirls of Korea but, as a taboo, has hardly been dealt with in a movie. The movie was selected as the special movie screened during the closing ceremony of the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival which closed only July 22 this year. |
