One of the best Korean directors of the 1960s, Lee Man Hee made 50 films between 1961 and his death in 1975. Best known for his thrillers and action films, the director's works sadly remain mostly unseen by modern audiences (prints of his masterpiece Late Autumn are said to no longer exist). Released in 1967, Homebound is a modern melodrama that looks into the conflicted inner world of a woman (Moon Jung Suk) who has reached her limits caring for her husband (Kim Jin Kyu), a Korean War veteran unable to escape his wartime trauma and memories. One day, while delivering her husband's writings to a newspaper, she meets a reporter who offers tempting respite from the suffocating depression and loneliness of her family life. The urge to stray, however, also drives her further into darkness and guilt. |
