This volume introduces, for the first time in English, the work of one of the major schools of historiography in South Korea. Centered at Yonsei University, the school focuses on intellectual and socioeconomic history. A selection of studies illuminates the internal dynamics and historical roots of Korea’s transition to modernity and the division of the country and is a powerful refutation of the so-called "stagnation theory." The volume is in three parts: the first covers the period before the Japanese occupation; the second focuses on the socioeconomic history during the occupation; and the last examines the work of three major intellectuals of the occupation period: Paek Nam’un, An Chaehong, and Yi Sunt’ak.

The work of Kim Yong-sop and his students, a collection of which is contained in this volume, is one of the rare places where the complicated sequence of modern agrarian history can be appreciated in its fullness, from the late Choson period through the differing agrarian outcomes in North and South Korea. The best thing to be said about
Kim Yong-sop's courageous and committed scholarship is what he himself says: the root cause of the national division is to be found in the history of lord and peasant,
and the remedies that both Koreas took, or did not take, to deal with the fundamental problems that arose from those longstanding relationships. This is serious history that can be appreciated by serious people in the South and the North, and by intellectuals everywhere.
